Key points for diagnosis of Lochiorrhea

Lochiorrhea is marked by incessant discharge of lochia for over three weeks after labor, usually seen in subinvolution of uterus, infectious disease and diseases due to disturbance of blood coagulation.

Lochiorrhea is usually caused by weakness, exhaustion of qi with loss of blood during labor, impairment of the spleen due to puerperal overstrain, sinking of the gastrosplenic qi, weakness of the thoroughfare and conception vessels to control blood; or by excessive intake of pungent and dry foods after labor; or by transformation of heat from depression of liver qi that impairs the thoroughfare and conception vessels as well as drives blood to flow abnormally; or by invasion of pathogenic cold after labor,leading to cold coagulation and blood stasis; or by emotional factors, qi stagnation and blood stasis in the thoroughfare and conception vessels as well as abnormal circulation of qi and blood. The main symptoms are incessant lochiorrhea for over three weeks and distension or pain in the lower abdomen.

Key points for diagnosis

(1) Vaginal bleeding with small amount over three weeks after labor.

(2) Gynecological examination is necessary to detect subinvolution, or mild infection of the uterus, or retention of placenta and fetal membrane.

(3) Choriocarcinoma and malignant mole should be excluded.

Tonification should not affect the stomach and leave blood stasis during the supplementation of nutrients. The diet should not only be bland, delicious, light, and easy in absorption, but also contain rich nutrients, sufficient quantity of heat and water. The parturients should abstain from greasy diet, uncooked and cold fruits as well as the pungent and hot-natured foods consuming body fluids. The new parturients of one to three days after the delivery may eat millet gruel, soft rice, stewed egg, soup of lean meat, etc. Later on, they may ingest all egg, milk, meat, bone soup, bean products, coarse food grain and vegetables. Simultaneously, the parturients should be supplementarily treated with the dietary therapy. For instance, the patients with asthenia of the spleen and stomach may ingest Huaishanyao Biandou Jingmi Gruel (Gruel of Rhizoma Dioscorease, Semen Dolichoris and Semen Oryzae Sativae)£»the patients with lumbago due to renal asthenia may take Zhuyaozi Caimo Gruel (Gruel of Ren Suis and Minced Vegetable)£»the patients with lochiorrhagia may take Danggui Shengjiang Yangrou Soup (Soup of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens and Mutton) or Yimucao Hongtang Liquid (Decoction of Herba Leonuri and Brown Sugar), etc.
